For a large number of diseases there are no effective drugs available so far. For rare and neglected diseases, conventional drug development is often far too expensive and therefore not profitable. Therefore, the development of new ways and methods of drug development is an important key to the fight against diseases. With the methods of fragment-based drug development further developed in AEGIS, the discovery of new drugs has become faster and thus much cheaper. Using the PEX14 protein, which plays a key role in the metabolism of trypanosomes, the pathogens that cause African sleeping sickness, this film shows how AEGIS fellows have developed new drugs to combat the disease.
